In 2018, a private school in Welwyn, Hertfordshire approached us to support the technical delivery of their biennial production, Bugsy Malone. What began as a request for additional lighting and stage decking quickly evolved into a full-scale production solution following consultation with the Headmistress, Head of Drama, and Head of Music. Transforming the school’s sports hall—a large, high-ceilinged space—we designed and installed a complete truss ground support system to safely fly lighting and sound above head height, maximising the performance area below. The build included a 12m-wide rear stage wall with scenic panels, a tiered stage deck system for key set pieces, and a comprehensive technical package featuring theatre and moving head lighting, full sound reinforcement, and a 24-way lapel/headset microphone system. To complement the performance space, we designed a 10-tier seating structure to accommodate 150 guests per night across a four-show run, ensuring excellent sightlines throughout. The production received outstanding feedback, leading to an ongoing collaboration over the next five years with increasingly ambitious builds, including High School Musical and culminating in Matilda in 2022, which featured a 12m x 4m video wall delivering fully digital, dynamic set backdrops.
